Hot tears form during the late stages of solidification when the developing casting cannot accommodate the imposed contraction. This makes hot tearing a problem involving geometry, material behavior and manufacturing restraint together. Treating it simply as a crack to be ground away misses the mechanism that may cause it to recur.

Examine the junction where the indication appears

Changes in section and connections between regions can affect how the casting contracts. The location of a tear relative to those features is important evidence. Record whether the problem follows a particular junction or appears in different areas across production.

The University of Iowa’s hot-tearing research overview relates the phenomenon to contraction that can no longer be accommodated during solidification. For a real component, the foundry must evaluate the actual geometry and process conditions.

Distinguish hot tearing from later damage

A crack discovered during final inspection is not automatically a hot tear. Handling, cutting, heat treatment or other operations can create different damage. Evidence about when the indication first appeared helps narrow the cause.

Preserve relevant surfaces and records before attempting a disposition. An approved examination can help establish the character of the indication, while production history connects it to the stage at which it formed.

Consider changes as part of a complete design

A transition, local section or manufacturing support arrangement may merit review. Any geometry change needs to preserve the component’s load path, stiffness and assembly requirements. Adding or removing material without that review can exchange one problem for another.

Likewise, process changes should be controlled and evaluated against new results. The purpose is to establish a route that produces acceptable components, not merely to make the visible tear less frequent in one trial.

Keep repair approval separate from prevention

Whether a particular component can be repaired depends on the governing requirements and authorized procedure. That disposition does not demonstrate that the underlying production issue has been resolved.

Northeast Castings can review critical casting sections with the drawing and examination evidence. Connecting contraction, restraint and the observed location creates a more useful investigation than using the term hot tear as a complete diagnosis.
